CHOOSING the right board

Why use the SmoothStar board recommendation calculator?

SmoothStar is a technical surf trainer designed specifically to a rider’s height and weight within each model’s design process. The 'Choose your SmoothStar' calculator (below) matches surfers with the right model to ensure the board responds and rides with a smooth, fluid response. While the calculator is accurate, some riders fit between two models. If this is the case, we give riders an opportunity to experience the different type of feeling/benefit of both models.

Height

Height is the most important element when selecting a SmoothStar as it reflects the rider’s natural surf stance. At all times, your SmoothStar should mirror your exact surf stance. This ensures a seamless transition from training on land with your SmoothStar to surfing in the water. A narrower surf stance causes the rider to fall off, “bog rail”, or accidentally slide out on their SmoothStar/surfboard. A stance that is too wide will result in the rider being less manoeuvrable on their surfboard or SmoothStar.

Weight

Weight is the secondary element which is factored into the SmoothStar recommendation guide. It is the wheels of the SmoothStar that accommodate a rider’s weight. In most situations, the rider’s height correlates with a rider’s weight. For example, the taller you are, typically the heavier you will be. SmoothStar recommends that riders purchase a second set of wheels in a different size for different conditions. For more information on getting the best out of your wheels, please see this section.

"SmoothStar products are purposely designed for a surfer's height and weight"

Wheel Base & Deck Length

Typically, the shorter the wheelbase, the tighter the turning and more critical the manoeuvres. However, you don’t want it so short that the width of your legs (stance) becomes too narrow. We recommend thinking about your surfing stance. Your optimum surf stance should be slightly wider than your shoulder width. Measure the width of your stance against the wheelbase of your chosen SmoothStar model.

Deck Shape & Concave

Deck concave is a crucial element in emulating the surf feel by connecting your feet to the board. All SmoothStar deck designs have undergone rigorous testing for the appropriate rider height and weight. The 26", 30", 32", 33" and 39" models have a flatter deck concave, making them better for down the line speed whereas the 32.5", 34" and 35.5" models have a deeper concave which helps the rider perform more dynamic rail-to-rail turns. The shape of the concave helps the board stick better to the rider's feet - giving it more of a responsive feel. Most users prefer riding the concave deck barefoot. Let's face it - you don't surf with shoes so why ride a SmoothStar with shoes? SmoothStar boards have an extremely low tail kicker which is designed to emulate the tail pad on your surfboard.

How accurate are SmoothStar’s board recommendations?

SmoothStar board recommendations are the most common questions we receive from customers wanting to improve their surfing. This is why we have developed a comprehensive guide in the above ‘Choose your SmoothStar’ calculator for our customers. In 98% of cases, the SmoothStar recommended by our calculations is correct. All models are tried and tested by team riders, surf coaches and SmoothStar staff who match the same recommended rider height/weight profiles. Our board calculator helps you clearly identify the right board for your surf stance. Therefore, transitioning from your surfboard to your SmoothStar and vice versa is seamless. Customers who are tall and slim, for example, may not match the SmoothStar calculations which align to typical height and weight ratios (male or female). In this instance, we recommend you purchase the SmoothStar that is right for your height and also purchase an additional set of wheels designed specifically for your weight. It is common for SmoothStar owners to have two different types of wheel profiles in their set-ups. For more information on getting the best out of your wheels, please see this section.

Personalise your SmoothStar with different wheels
