Pro Surferin Johanne Defay ist neuestes Mitglied im SmoothStar Team. Mit einem achten Rang am Ende der WSL World Tour 2015 ist sie im SmothStar Team mit Top 10 Surfer Filipe Toledo in bester Gesellschaft.
Johanne infizierte sich mit dem SmoothStar Virus, nachdem sie im Februar 2015 ein 33″ Holy Toledo Pro Model von Frankreichs bestem Surf Coach Yann Martin bekam. Da SmoothStar sich an Land genauso verhält wie ein Surfboard im Wasser, konnte Johanne ihre Skills direkt umsetzen und verliebte sich auf Anhieb.
Ihre Karriere als Pro Surferin begann Johanne Defay auf Reunion Island, einem französischen Überseegebiet im Indischen Ozean. Johanne ist eine der kraftvollsten Surferinnen der Welt und ist für ihre Backside Manöver auf großen Wellen in den Reihen der WSL gefürchtet.
Johanne ist erst 22 Jahre alt, ist aber schon seit 2014 auf der Women’s Tour dabei. Mit ihrem herzlichen Wesen und einem bezaubernden Lächeln täuscht sie an Land gut darüber hinweg, wie präzise und unschlagbar sie im Wasser ist.
Karriere Highlights
Für das SmoothStar Johanne wurde ein neues Model direkt nach ihren persönlichen Vorgaben und Spezifikationen entwickelt. Das neue Board ist 32.5″ inch lang und liegt damit zwischen unserem 32″ Flying Fish Grom Board und dem 33″ Holy Toledo. Das Johanne hat eine noch tiefere Concave im Deck die für besonders leichte Rail to Rail Turns erlaubt, genauso wie Johanne Style beim Surfen. Das Board kommt mit einem extra breiten Tail, wodurch man genug Platz hat um den Fuß beim Snap auszustrecken, ohne dass die Zehen dabei vom Tail rutschen. Johannes Board kann von Groms ab 155cm genauso gefahren werden, wie von Erwachsenen bis 181cm.
Im Zentrum des Designs steht eine "Ravenala" Pflanze, auch Baum der Reisenden oder Travelling Palm genannt, als Sinnbild ihres Surf Spirits. Ähnlich ihrem Leben und ihrer Karriere, tragen die Wellen des Ozeans die Saat der Ravenala in alle Teile der Welt. Einmal an Land gespült, sprießen Wurzeln und sie beginnt Küste und Land zu erkunden.
Das neue SmoothStar Holy Toledo ist das Pro Model des brasilianischen Surf Superstars Filipe Toledo. In Zusammenarbeit mit Filipe haben die Designer bei SmoothStar 6 Monate in die Entwicklung und Optimierung von Nose, Tail und Wheelbase investiert und das Ergebnis ist ein erstaunliches neues Surf-Skateboard. Das Holy Toledo Model ist damit eines der am weitesten entwickelten Surf Skateboards, dass jedem Surfer helfen kann besser zu surfen und auch außerhalb des Wasser seinen Surf Flow zu trainieren.

Professional Female surfer Johanne Defay has joined the SmoothStar team. Finishing 2015 in position #8, she joins SmoothStar’s fellow top 10 surfer Filipe Toledo.
Johanne first became a fan of SmoothStar in February 2015 after receiving a 33″ Holy Toledo from France’s best Surf Coach Yann Martin. As SmoothStar is the closest to surfing outside the water, Johanne rode it exactly like she was surfing and loved it.
Johanne Defay is a professional surfer based in Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean and rides under the French Flag. Johanne is one of the most powerful surfers on the planet and is known to have the best big wave backhand manoeuvres on the Women’s WSL.
Johanne is 22 years old and has been on the professional Women’s Tour since 2014. She has a big heart and gorgeous smile outside the water but lethal and savage turns in the water.
Career Highlights
SmoothStar has created a new model for Johanne where she has a direct impact into the design and specifications of her model. The new model is 32.5″ and it fits in between the 32″ Flying Fish grom board and the 33″ Holy Toledo. The model has a deeper concave for better rail to rail turns, just like Johanne’s surfing. The tail is extra wide so this helps adults not just groms do radical snaps and not have the toes drop off the back of the tail. Johanne’s board is suitable for groms over 155cm and adults under 181cm.
Featured on the centre of the board is a Travelling Palm called a “Ravenala” which is representative of her surfing sole. Similar to her life and career, ocean waves take the seed of the travelling palm to other parts of the world. They wash ashore, grow their roots and explore the ocean and the land.
Our SmoothStar Thruster has been sold in over 40 countries across the world. It has made many customers very happy and for this we are stoked. However, as our boards and technology has improved, we have seen some customers put our Thruster on skateboards that contrast with our specifications of complete boards. We also getting various technical questions why customers couldn’t emulate our same surfing feel of our complete setups.
So with regret we have had to stop selling individual Thrusters world wide.

SmoothStar has a long history in Australia with young up and coming surf groms. Some of these groms grew up to become surfing superstars on the WSL tour. It is testimony to the SmoothStar product and that it is entrench into Aussie surf culture. Owen and Tyler father Rob Wright is still using SmoothStar on a weekly basis in Lennox Head, NSW on the same boards that his kids used. We’ve of course updated his SmoothStar quiver to include Filipe Toledo’s pro model “Holy Toledo” into the mix.

Laura Enever, the glamour queen of female professional surfing was also a SmoothStar teamrider, ripping it up on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, not far from SmoothStar HQ.
